Beirut (AsiaNews) – Wissam Eid, a captain with the Internal Security Forces, was apparently traveling back from a meeting with the commission investigating the assassination of former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri when he was killed by a car bomb in Furn el-Shebback, close to Mount Lebanon Hospital and La Sagesse University.
According to Red Cross sources, al least three order people died in the blast; five according to media reports, including two security officials. Many were wounded.
Today’s attack against an official representing an institution considered close to the ruling anti-Syrian coalition comes ten days after another attack against a US Embassy car, and just over a month since the assassination of General Francois Haji, who was expected to replace Army Commander Michel Suleiman, slated to be Lebanon’s next president.
In a phone call with AsiaNews, Maronite Patriarch Card Nasrallah Sfeir condemned the criminal act. He renewed his appeal to all those involved to put a stop to all these acts of violence and, imploring God’s mercy, he expressed his utmost concern over the further deterioration of the country's political situation after the failure of the Arab initiative led by Arab League Secretary General Amr Moussa.
