The incident started when about 1,000 workers blocked the bridge spanning China's Yangtze river in the eastern province of Anhui on Tuesday afternoon. About 500 riot police then moved in and had demonstrators removed by later that evening.
“Ten workers were hurt in clashes (with the riot police),” the ICHRD said.
Local police and a spokesman for the developer which employed the workers confirmed the incident, but said the dispute had been resolved.
“Because Chinese New Year is coming, some workers had booked tickets to go home, so they were angry with the company,” said a company spokesman, who declined to give his name. “Now the problem has been resolved and workers got their salaries.”
The problem appears to be due to financing problems the company had with the banks.
As a result of the global economic crisis China has grappled with a number of strikes involving taxi drivers, police and laid-off factory workers in recent months.
Amid fears of rising unemployment and social unrest, the government launched a US$ 520 billion stimulus package to boost the economy.
