New Delhi (AsiaNews/Agencies) India and Pakistan seem to be on the right path in their dispute over Kashmir. Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today announced reductions in Indian troop deployment in the contested region. The Prime Minister explained that the decision was taken after guerrilla infiltrations dropped significantly. For years, New Delhi had accused Islamabad of being behind such violations of the ceasefire line.
Pakistan welcomed the Indian move stating that it was a step in the right direction. Earlier this month, Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf had proposed a plan to reach military disengagement in Kashmir and to delimit the border with India.
In the last 50 years, the Kashmir question has triggered two wars between Pakistan and India (in 1948 and 1965).
