Guangzhou (AsiaNews / Agencies) - At least 13 people were killed and over 34 are missing in southern China after the passage of Typhoon Fanapi, which caused flooding and landslides. The typhoon made landfall in Guangdong two days ago, after leaving two people dead and destruction in its wake on the island of Taiwan.
The national weather centre said that Fanapi is the strongest typhoon to hit China this year. It forecasts that until tomorrow there will still be strong or torrential rains in central and western parts of Guangdong. Currently typhoon Fanapi is moving at a speed of 10 kph.
The worst incident happened in Qianbai in Xinyi Yinyan Tin mine, where a dam collapsed killing five people, six are missing and seven injured. According to official reports in the area of Rupingtang the flood water and mud killed three, has buried 12 people and three others are still missing. In Gaozhou two people were killed and five missing, in Yangchun three are dead and eight missing.
At least 350 homes were damaged in Xinyi.
In recent days in southern Taiwan typhoon Fanapi the killed two people, flooding the entire area with water to at least one meter in height. The emergency operations center said that the heavy rains have caused damage in fisheries and agriculture amounting to over 60 million U.S. dollars and a further 60 million in damage to industry.
