Central Java: Merapi erupts again, no victims
The eruption resumed this morning with hot ash clouds 3 km high. The death toll from the first eruption on 27 October increases to 35.

Jakarta (AsiaNews / Agencies) - the eruption of Mount Merapi (Central Java) resumed this morning spewing a new cloud of ash and lava 3 km high. Thanks to evacuation plans implemented in recent days, there are no victims and rescue workers manages to save villagers who defied orders to stay in government-run emergency shelters and returned to their fields to work.

The volcano awoke on 27 October. 35 people died from asphyxia or were burned by the hot clouds. Instead 40 thousand inhabitants from villages on the slopes of the volcano are currently housed in shelters. Yogyakarta and other cities within a short distance from the eruption have been covered in ash and the risk of intoxication remains high.

Merapi is 2,968 meters high and is considered one of the world's most active volcanoes in the world. Its last eruption was in 2006 and killed two people. The most devastating explosion took place in 1930 and claimed more than 1,500 deaths.
