Three Tibetans arrested in Tawu without reason
The three were taken into custody between 19 and 22 August. All three are from Tawu, the same county where a young monk committed suicide on 15 August to protest against Chinese repression.
Dharamsala (AsiaNews) – Chinese police arrested three Tibetans between 19 and 22 August in Tawu County (Kandze, Sichuan). Despite pleas from family members, the authorities refused to tell them the reasons for their detention.
The three are Norbu, from Rinah Lunpa village, who was arrested in Siyo; Gyaltsen from Nyeshap, detained by police at a hospital in Chengdu where he had accompanied a relative; and a third person whose identity is not known.
According to local sources, the three were taken into custody in connection with the suicide on 15 August of Tsewang Norbu, a young monk from Nyitso Monastery, who set himself on fire to demand freedom for the Tibetan people.
Following the incident, Chinese authorities surrounded the monastery and placed armed personnel in its school. They did however allow relatives and friends to pay their respect to the dead man’s family.
