- The dreams of Indian boxer Devendro Singh of getting a boxing medal for India,
after the unexpected bronze for Chungneijang Mary Kom in the women's flyweight category,
have come to an end. The 20 year-old lightweight boxer was defeated by the
Irish Paddy Barnes who won with a score of 23 to 18. He will meet China's Zhou Shiming
in the semi-final. The Indian team has criticized judges for having penalized Devendro
several times.
To date, the Indian medal stands at three bronze and one silver.
Meanwhile, the boxer Mary Kom, has apologized to all the people of India for
failing to reach the final for the gold. "I did my best - she said in a press
conference - I've given everything, but I'm happy to return with a medal."
A native of the State of Manipur Imphal, in
the far east of India,
the young woman was one of the revelations of these Olympics, which opened for
the first time to female boxing. Born into a poor family, Kom has become a star
at home and has her own personal anthem "Mary, Queen of the Ring". In
several interviews, she has said she wanted to fight and win for the
emancipation of Indian women.
