Mumbai (AsiaNews) - Card. Paul Khu-Hsi Shan, SJ, Bishop Emeritus of Kaohsiung, died yesterday in Taipei on from pneumonia. (see 22/08/2012 " Card Paul Shan, the great evangeliser and unifier of the Church in China, has died"). The Cardinal never gave up his mission to reconcile the Church in China and bring the word of God, not even during his battle with cancer which began in 2006. Card. Speaking to AsiaNews Card. Oswald Gracias, archbishop of Mumbai and secretary general of the Federation of Asian Bishops' Conferences (FABC), recalls Card. Shan, as "a man who has served the Church with "joy and dedication", a "guide that instilled confidence."
Having learned with sadness of the death of Cardinal Paul Shan Kuo-His , I offer my heartfelt condolences and prayers.
The FABC pray s for Cardinal Paul Shan Kuo-His soul , that the Lord will grant peace to him who served the Church so intensely and generously and was dedicated to the evangelizing mission.
The commitment of Cardinal Paul Shan Kuo-His to the Church of China was remarkable, and served the Church with joy and dedication. He was looked upon as leader who instilled confidence. He knew the mind of the Church, and was a good administrator.
I have met Card Paul Shan Kuo-His on a number of occasions and spoke at length about the Church in China, Taiwan and his zeal to improve the relationship between the two Churches.
Card Paul Shan Kuo-His was actively involved in FABC matters as well and would make contributions on various issues.
Card Paul Shan Kuo-His's death is an immense loss for the Church in Asia, we now have a powerful intercessor in heaven.
