Cairo, fighting continues in the post-Morsi era: 15 dead
Attack on the sit-in in defense of the deposed president. Clashes have killed at least 40 between supporters and opponents of the former government. The dynamics of the retaliation are still uncertain.

Cairo (AsiaNews/agencies) - The number of protests to reinstate Mohammed Morsi to the presidency is growing. At least 15 people have died in the early hours of today before the building holding the same deposed premier. The dynamics of the clash are still uncertain, while the total number of victims of clashes between supporters and opponents of the former government has risen to more than 40.

The sit-in in favor of Morsi, which started last week in front of the barracks of the presidential guard, suffered an armed attack last night. Sources from the Muslim Brotherhood, the party Morsi comes from, are accusing the army of having opened fire on the protesters. Immediate was the denial by the armed forces who, through state media reported of at least 200 people belonging to a "terrorist group". Several protesters, interviewed by AFP, confirmed the presence of militants in civilian clothing during the clashes.

Mohammed Morsi, the first president with a clearly Islamist orientation, was deposed by the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF) last Wednesday, following "oceanic" protests on Sunday, June 30. He is succeeded Adly Mansour, former head of the Constitutional Court, with a mandate to lead the country to early elections.
