Bangladeshi bishops send lay people and priests to 'school of theology'

The Bishops' Conference and the Major Seminary hold a seminar to understand how to improve the teaching of Catholic doctrine. According to the prelates only through a major study of the theology can the Church in Bangladesh become more active.

Dhaka (AsiaNews) - By studying and teaching theology clergy and lay Catholics can help make the Church of Bangladesh more active. This was the aim of a national seminar organized by the Bishops' Conference and Major Seminary ending yesterday, which focused on how to improve the teaching of Catholic doctrine.

The meeting was attended by 62 intellectuals, six bishops and 30 priests. "The Church - Nirmol Rozario, secretary general of Bangladesh Christian Association told AsiaNews - is not just the clergy, but also of us lay people, we absolutely need to study theology more."

Among the speakers at the seminar there was also Msgr. Patrick D'Rozario, Archbishop of Dhaka and President of the Bishops' Conference of Bangladesh. "We want lay Catholics to be better prepared on doctrine - he said - and therefore we will start related courses."

In Bangladesh, Islam is the state religion. Out of a population of about 163.6 million people, 89% are Muslim, 9.6% Hindu, and only 0.4% are Christian (mostly Catholic).
