Dhaka (AsiaNews) - A total of four people dead and dozens injured during clashes between police and militants of an opposition party in Bangladesh. Last 5th January, anniversary of 2014 general electins, Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) called a Murder of Democracy Day. Meanwhile party government Awami League celebrated the date as a Constitution and Democracy Protection's Day.
For the opposition, the current government is illegitimate. All opposition parties boycotted the January poll in protest against Prime Minister and AL leader Sheikh Hasina.
The BNP and Jamaat called on Hasina to re-instate an apolitical caretaker government, whose mandate is to organise transparent elections over a period of 90 days.
The Murder of Democracy Day caused many discomforts to people. Public transports didn't run in Dhaka, the capital, and other cities. "I couldn't go to my office. I'm becoming a loser in my business," said Tarik Anam.
Though Dhaka witnessed stray clashes between BNP activists and police, the situation in several districts including Chittagong was worse.
Miscreants in Natore shot dead two BNP activists. In Rajshahi, one person was shot dead and at least 20 others were injured in clashes between BNP activists and police. In another incident, in Chapainawabganj's Shibganj, a man was shot dead when supporters of the BNP-led alliance breached a ban on gathering and clashed with police at Kansat.
At least 50 people were injured in three separate clashes between police and BNP.
