Damascus (AsiaNews) - The international coalition led by the United States has bombed a Syrian army military camp leaving four dead and 13 wounded. The news was released Syrian Observatory for Human Rights and refers to a bombing carried out yesterday against a camp located two kilometers west of Deir ez-Zor, a city under the control of the Islamic State (IS).
According to the Observatory it is an unprecedented raid. In fact, the coalition - which brings together several Western and Arab countries – claims its task is to fight the militia of the Islamic state, although many observers criticize the effectiveness and legality of its intervention in Syria without any permission from the Damascus government.
For months, the Syrian skies have been crowded by US, French, British, Russians, Israelis, Turks, Arabs, fighter jets but they appear to fight each on their own and with their own interests, even if they all proclaim their fight is against the IS.
Yesterday’s bombing is even more puzzling given that in recent days France, Britain and the United States itself suggested an alliance with the Syrian army and troops of opponents of President Bashar Assad to defeat the IS.
The fate of Bashar Assad is the dividing point: the Russians demand a role for him during the transition from the civil war to new elections; the US-led coalition - and especially opposition groups - want Assad ousted before agreeing to any solution.
