Sita Basnet’s family converted to Christianity 12 years ago. Before that, she and her husband struggled to maintain their family. The net result was that their children did poorly in school. Kathmandu (AsiaNews) – In one Nepali family life changed completely after conversion to Catholicism. The children began doing well in school and the parents got a good job. This is their story after they left Hinduism for Catholicism 12 years ago.

“The Catholic faith now helps us face poverty and gives fresh hope even in hopeless situations,” said the mother, Sita Basnet (pictured) who spoke to AsiaNews.

Sita, 35, has three children and works at a non-governmental organisation. She says that all the Catholic families lead a life of dignity, are well educated and are busy with different jobs.

Speaking about her conversion, she said, “It happened 12 years ago. My children were going to school. All were studying at a Hindu school. My husband and I worked there, but in a low-level position. It was hard to earn enough to get two meals a day for the whole family.”

Then, “One day I happened to see a Catholic family and they were fulfilled and living happy lives. So, I decided to visit a Catholic church where I was welcomed with Catholic greetings in the local language ‘Jaisubadhai’ (Praise the lord).

“I didn’t know these people; yet, in a few minutes, they all became friendly and welcoming as if I was family. That really encouraged me.”

Siba and her family began attending catechumen classes, and after three years, they were baptised.

“When we converted, God blessed us with a better job,” she said, a smile on her face. “Our eldest son graduated and is enrolled in a Jesuit-run college. For him, attending a Catholic college is crucial. He got good marks and is now in his last year in engineering.”

“I feel pride when I introduce myself as a Catholic,” she added, “because all the Catholic people are happy and well organised.”

“The Catholic faith is my new hope to overcome all kinds of problems. When I have a problem I pray, and everything is resolved.”
