by Joshua Lapide

The first two were trying to attack a settler and were killed by soldiers as they fled. Another Palestinian killed after two soldiers opened fire in the Qalandiya refugee camp near Jerusalem following attack with stones and Molotov cocktails. Since last October 128 Palestinians and 28 Israelis have been killed.

Jerusalem (AsiaNews) - Two Palestinians were killed this morning after they infiltrated an Israeli settlement in the West Bank and injured a settler who is also a reserve soldier.

The two Palestinians infiltrated the settlement of Eli, southeast of Ariel, near Nablus, and waited in front of a house with sticks and knife. When a settler, in the uniform of a military reservist, came out, they tried to attack him. The settler was able to scare the two assailants who fled, but were found by the military and were killed.

Two nights ago an almost parallel episode took place: a jeep with two Israeli soldiers on board entered – it would seem in error - in the Qalandiya refugee camp, near Jerusalem, in the West Bank. Police said the jeep was hit by stones and Molotov cocktails. Soldiers and police arrived to rescue the two soldiers opening fire, killing one Palestinian and wounding 10. The killed, the young 22 year old Iyad Sajadiyya Omar who was buried in the afternoon (see photo).

Since October last year, after a series of provocations by ultra-Orthodox Jews who went to pray on the Temple Mount – an event which also took place yesterday - incidents and clashes in Israel and the Palestinian territories have multiplied. So far 128 Palestinians, 28 Israeli, an American, a Sudanese and one Eritrean have been killed. Most Palestinians were killed as they tried to stab passersby or soldiers or ram them with their cars. Others were killed during demonstrations or clashes with the military.
