Over 100 killed and 200 missing. Train, air services disrupted.
Mumbai (AsiaNews/Agencies) - Heavy down pour of monsoon rains lashed the city and the Goa-Konkan region over the last 24 hours paralysing road, rail and air traffic leading to suspension of long distance and suburban train services and flights. Consequently, thousands of commuters are stranded.
It is reported that over 100 persons have died due o land slides and about 200 missing. Among the victims were 3 children in Marol area of Mumbai.
Incessant rains have caused water-logging in many places and in Goa deaths are reported due to land-slides.
Due to water submerging railway tracks, many of the suburban train services on the central, harbour and western routes were terminated in the city of Mumbai, plunging lakhs of daily commuters in deep trouble.
It is also reported that some outgoing long-distance trains were cancelled and several in-bound trains were detained at various places, railway sources said.
In many parts, schools have been closed for due to the unprecedented rains in the suburban areas of Mumbai.
Yesterday afternoon onwards, some Mumbai-bound flights were diverted to Ahmedabad and Delhi due to poor visibility. Several flights were also delayed causing immense inconveniences to travellers. International travellers have been stranded at airports causing severe disruption in onward journeys.
The inclement weather forced thousands of commuters to spend the night in their work places, vehicles and railway stations in Mumbai.
