Moon, Catholic candidate for president: Protagonists not spectators in dialogue with Kim Jong-un

Direct talks  with Kim Jong-un and a review of the deployment of Thaad anti-missile system. Meanwhile, the US sends Carl Vinson aircraft carrier to Sea of Japan for a showdown. Xi Jinping: Use peaceful means.

Seoul (AsiaNews) - Moon Jae-in, a candidate for the May presidential elections, says South Koreans should not be spectators but protagonists in dialogue with the North and that he would be ready for direct dialogue with the dictator Kim Jong -a.

Moon, a Catholic, with an excellent chance of victory, made his statements in an interview with the "Korea Herald" two days ago, just as the United States sent the aircraft carrier Carl Vinson, with about 6 thousand armed soldiers to the Sea of Japan for a show of strength after several threats from Pyongyang. “I feel that we should take the lead. At present, we are spectators who hope for the US-China talks to go well.”

He expressed regret that talks in Florida between presidents Donald Trump and Xi Jinping failed to reach agreement on North Korea. In recent weeks, the US administration said it would consider every option, even a military one to force Kim Jong-un to abandon his nuclear and missile program.

Yesterday Trump posted a new threatening tweet: "North Korea is looking for trouble. If China decides to help, that would be great. If not, we will solve the problem without them!”.

In a telephone conversation with Trump, reported today by the Chinese TV, Xi stressed that China wants to denuclearize the Korean peninsula "to safeguard peace and stability, and suggests peaceful means to solve problems."

Moon said that if victorious, he will review the decision to allow the deployment of US Thaad anti-missile system, hated by China and the Church of South Korea. Each Thaad unit costs about 800 thousand US dollars.

The candidate also promised to commit to create at least 500 thousand jobs and to increase public spending for education, welfare and environmental care.
