Mike Pompeo meets Kim Jong-un in secret

American sources report meeting. It is the first high-level encounter between the two countries since 2000. The Washington-Pyongyang summit is essential for peace on the peninsula.

Seoul (AsiaNews) - CIA director and incoming US secretary of state Mike Pompeo has met in secret with Kim Jong-un, reports The Washington Post reports today, citing official American sources aware of the trip.

Representative of Washington’s "hard line", Pompeo reportedly went to North Korea on Easter weekend to discuss the possible summit between US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. It is the highest level meeting between Washington and Pyongyang since 2000, when the then Secretary of State Madeleine Albright met the late Kim Jong-il, Kim Jong-un's father.

Yesterday, during a meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in Florida, Trump himself spoke of direct contacts at the "extremely" high level of the US government with the North Korean authorities. On the same occasion, the American president commented that the two Koreas have his "blessing to end the war".

Just yesterday, Msgr. Lazzaro You Heung-sik, bishop of Daejon, underlined that the summit between the US and North Korea will be fundamental to define the future of the Korean peninsula: "Pyongyang will consider that the question of denuclearization of the Korean peninsula is essentially connected with the normalization of diplomatic relations with the United States and with the irrevocable guarantee of the security of its regime ".

The final date or place for the summit between Trump and Kim has yet to be decided.
