Ilarion: The world has entered a new period of the cold war

The Metropolitan of Volokolamsk, head of the Moscow Patriarchate Department for Foreign Relations, is concerned about the lack of relations and dialogue between the US and Russia. There is a need to make sure that "the cold war does not grow into a real war".

Moscow (AsiaNews / Agencies) - Metropolitan of Volokolamsk, Ilarion (Alfeyev), says that the world has already entered a period of new cold war, especially looking at the tense relations between Russia and the United States. The metropolitan, who is also head of the Synodal Department of the Moscow Patriarchate for relations with foreign countries, adds that in order to avoid a real war, the leaders of the world must sit down at the negotiating table and talk.

Speaking on the Rossiia-24 Tivu channel’s the "Church and World" program, Ilarion said: "We are already living in the reality of cold war and I consider that now the responsibility lies upon all sides of the conflict and this is a responsibility first of all to see that the cold war does not grow into a real war".

The metropolitan referred explicitly to the relationship between the US and Russia. " And just like it was in the time of the cold war - he added - there is no direct dialogue, and in the absence of a direct dialogue the sides are not able to agree with one another". Ilarion concluded " "it is necessary to stop somewhere and sit down at the negotiating table".
