China and India join the list of best universities in the world

For the first time, a Chinese university is ranked 20th in the world. Some 63 Indian universities are also among the top 1,500. Oxford University is still first, but the US dominates with 8 out of 10. Hong Kong and South Korea are in good positions.


London (AsiaNews) – The 2021 World University Rankings was published today by the Times Higher Education, ranking the world’s top 1,500 universities.

This year, the list contains some surprises. For the first time, Beijing’s Tsinghua University is in the top 20, the first Chinese university to do so.

Three other Chinese universities are now among the first 100: Shanghai’s Fudan University (70th place) ranking), the University of Science and Technology of China in (Hefei, Anhui (87th place), and Hangzhou’s Zhejiang University (94th place).

India too now is in the top with 63 universities, up from 49 last year, with the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in Bengaluru (Karnataka) leading the way in the 301-350 group. the IISc has qualified for the rankings in 2015.

World-wide Oxford University is first in terms of the quality of its teaching, international outlook, research, and knowledge transfer.

Overall, the United States still dominates the top 10, with eight universities. The other top ten is Cambridge University, also in the United Kingdom.
