Demonstrations in the capital and other cities of the country have continued for three months. The leader of the opposition: The demonstrations will continue until victory. Tikhanovskaya hopes to meet Biden, who has often "taken firm positions in support of the Belarusian people".

Minsk (AsiaNews / Agencies) - More than 800 people were arrested in various cities of Belarus during the demonstrations that followed over the weekend.

Yesterday, a massive demonstration took place in the capital, with thousands of participants, to demand the resignation of President Alexandr Lukashenko, accused of fraud in the last elections on 9 August.

Svetlana Tikhanovskaja, the opponent who claims victory in the elections, exiled in Lithuania, yesterday declared that after 90 days of continuous demonstrations and continuous repression, the regime "has lost its legitimacy and power". She promised that the demonstrations will continue "until victory".

Two days ago, at the news of Joe Biden's victory in the US presidency, congratulating him, he declared that the elections in the United States "were a real race for ideas, programs, with teamwork, unlike Belarus, where the votes were simply stolen ”.

Stressing that Biden has often "taken firm positions in support of the Belarusian people", Tikhanovskaya said she hopes the new US president will soon meet with "the justly elected president in a new and free Belarus".

For his part, Lukashenko called the US elections "a parody of democracy" and that he does not expect relations with Washington to change with the new president.
