Hong Kong (AsiaNews) - Police arrested a Democratic district councilor this morning over his participation in a May protest against the new security law approved last June 30. The news appeared on the Facebook page of Raymond Li, representative of the Sha Tin district. He is accused of causing disturbances in a public place. Freed shortly after the arrest, he will have to appear before the court again on November 23.
Li followed the demonstration as part of his task to control police behaviour. Since the summer of 2019, and until the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic, the pro-democracy movement has organized almost daily demonstrations to defend city autonomy over Beijing's dominion.
The approval of the draconian measure on national security has stifled the initiatives of the democratic camp. Last week, anti-establishment members of the city parliament (Legco) resigned en masse after Carrie Lam’s executive - on the orders of the Chinese authorities - ousted four of them from the assembly.
The Democratic front fears that its district councilors, who won 90% of the seats in the last elections, will be the next to be eliminated.
