Another member of the National League for Democracy dies in prison

Zaw Myat Linn was arrested in the early hours of this morning. Khin Maung Latt, campaign strategist for Aung San Suu Kyi's party, also died in prison a few days ago. Meanwhile protests continue. So far, 60 protesters have died and 1,800 people have been arrested.


Yangon (AsiaNews) – Another member of the National League for Democracy (NLD) has died today in prison.

According to sources from Aung San Suu Kyi's party, the leader of the civilian government overthrown by the military on 1 February, Zaw Myat Linn was arrested in the early hours of this morning. The family went to a military hospital in Yangon to retrieve his body.

Khin Maung Latt, the NLD's election campaign manager, also died in prison overnight between  Saturday and Sunday.

In the November's elections, the pro-democracy party, in power since 2015, won a stunning victory, which was later disavowed by General Min Aung Hlaing's military.

This morning Security Forces arrested 40 people in Yangon, mostly university students.

So far, 60 people have died in protests against the military coup. According to humanitarian groups, more than 1,800 people have been arrested by the military.
