The parents of Saneesh Joseph, who died last week in the sinking of a barge, have donated the compensation money they received to a relief fund and a library in Kerala. For Bishop Vadakumthala of Kannur, they are a great witness of faith.
Mumbai (AsiaNews) – The father of 36-year-old Saneesh Joseph, one of the victims of the sinking of barge P305 a few days ago off the coast of Mumbai during Cyclone Tauktae, has decided to donate to charity the money his family received as compensation for their loss.
About 100,000 rupees (around ,370) will go to the Relief Fund set up by the Kerala government whilst another 100,000 rupees will pay for the upgrade a library in Kannur district, where the family hails.
Saneesh Joseph, unmarried, grew up in a Christian family in the village of Chemperi. He worked for Mathew Associates, and was supposed to come home by the end of the month.
Two days before the tragedy he celebrated his birthday aboard barge P-305; that was the last time his family heard from him.
Saneesh's body was eventually recovered and returned to Kerala. His funeral was held at Lourdes Matha Forane Church in Chemperi.
“Even in the midst of suffering and sacrifice, the family of Saneesh Joseph made a very inspirational decision, which sends a great message to society and the community,” said Bishop Alex Vadakumthala of Kannur speaking to AsiaNews.
“Even in the face of sorrow and loss, this has a witness value. Whilst difficulties, anguish, and sorrow may occur in life, we can go beyond our suffering and be good to society. We can be a witness to society and the community and contribute to the future.
The decision to donate money “springs forth from the deep faith of the family,” the prelate noted. This “shows that faith is witnessed during such a crisis, and it is faith which motivates us to place our trust in the Lord, who sacrificed himself on the Cross, and gives us inspiration in moments of crisis to be courageous witness.”
