Buildings collapsed from flood waters. Chembur and Vikhroli suffer the heaviest toll. Local parishes have opened their doors to those who lost everything. “I pray for the victims and the survivors,” said Card Gracias.

Mumbai (AsiaNews) – At least 33 people have lost their lives in the last 24 hours in Mumbai in incidents caused by the violent rainfall that hit the metropolis. The city was hit by heavy flooding that interrupted local railway and car traffic. The latest weather forecasts expect more rain today.

As many as 21 of people have died in the Chembur district, where a landslide caused the collapse of some houses. Damage was reported in Vikhroli with 10 deaths, as some encampments were swept away.

TV channels showed rescuers digging the mud with their bare hands to extract the bodies and carry them away on makeshift stretchers. It is feared that more dead will be found among the debris.

Card Oswald Gracias, archbishop of Mumbai, spoke to AsiaNews about the disaster.

“I am deeply saddened to learn about the tragic loss of life from collapsing walls and houses caused by the landslides that followed heavy rains,” said the prelate.

“I pray for the victims and the survivors, and I share the grief and pain of survivors and their families,” he added.

The cardinal explained that the archdiocese through its parishes is providing emergency shelters, food and emergency relief to homeless survivors. Catholic hospitals are also treating the injured.

He went on to say: “I entreat God’s mercy to save our people, who are already suffering because of the pandemic, for the healing of the injured ad the consolation of all who grieve.

“I invoke God's blessings and guidance for all our civil authorities, and all those involved in the search, relief and rescue efforts.”
