Taipei (AsiaNews) - Msgr. Joseph Ti-Kang, Archbishop emeritus of the Taiwanese capital, passed away this morning at the age of 94. A surgical examination discovered a blood clot of about three centimeters in his brain.Too old to undergo surgery, doctors could not save him...
Bishop Ti-Kang was born May 7, 1928, in Xiuwu County, Henan Province, then part of the Republic of China. Ordained a priest at the Roman Catholic Pontifical University in 1953, he was vicar general of the archdiocese of Taipei in 1966. In July 1975 he became bishop of Kiayi.
Pope John Paul II appointed him coadjutor archbishop of Taipei on May 3, 1985, and then assumed leadership of the archdiocese in February 1989. He would remain in office until January 2004: upon his retirement due to age limit, the faithful expressed admiration for his work, which coincided with a period of great political and social change in the island.
His successor, Msgr. Joseph Cheng Tsai-fa, died Sept. 2 at the age of 90. Prior to his pastoral service in the capital's archdiocese between 2004 and 2007, he was bishop of Tainan and apostolic administrator of Kinmen and Matsu.
Bishop Ti-Kang also served as president of Fu Jen Catholic University from 1993 to 1999. Once news of his passing circulated, the local Catholic community left messages on its social media, wishing him peace in his memory.
