Colombo (AsiaNews) – Card Malcolm Ranjith, Archbishop of Colombo, led the 75th Children's Day last Saturday at the National Basilica of Our Lady of Lanka, Tewatta.

Centred on the theme “Children, you are a gift from the Lord”, the meeting gave thousands of children the opportunity to engage in activities and show their talents in Sinhala, Tamil, and English.

“Do not evaluate the life that God has given you with the standards that exist at the social level - Card Ranjith told the children.

“God creates every child with a special purpose and goal,” and “God prepares everyone living in the world from childhood with His purpose.”

While “We are all the same in God's love, we don’t have the same calling”. Indeed, “The more we are open to this particular journey, the more we allow God to make His dream come true in our lives.”

What is more, “you should never look at your friend and underestimate yourself if you can't do something.” Or believe “That your life does not matter."

To make his point, Card Ranjith spoke to the children about the lives of some very young saints, from Saint Tarcisius, who was willing to face martyrdom to fulfil God's will, and Saint Dominic Savio, who lived a life built around the Eucharist, to Teresa of Lisieux, the little flower of Jesus, and Carlo Acutis, an Italian teenager born in the 1990s who was beatified a few years ago.

After the blessing of the children with the statue of Our Lady of Lanka, the day ended with performances by students.
