Tokyo (AsiaNews/Agencies) The population of Japan has surpassed the Italian one to become the most elderly in the world. This was announced by the government yesterday and concern was expressed about the impact of a rapidly aging population on the world's second largest economy.
People aged 65 or older accounted for 21% of the total population while youth aged 15 and below accounted for 13.6%, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications said in a preliminary report.
This data replaces that of last year's global census, which put Italy in first place in terms of the eldest population, with 20%aged over 65, while Bulgaria ranked first for having the lowest number of youth, with 13.8% aged below 15.
According to Tokyo, one in four Japanese may be aged 65 or older in 2015.
