Nuncio in Russia: dialogue with Orthodox a must

At the closing of the plenary session of the Conference of Catholic Bishops, Mgr Mennini made a call for ecumenism, "fulfillment of Christ's will to unity among Christians".


Saratov (AsiaNews) – The Apostolic Nuncio in Russia, Mgr Antonio Mennini, has once more emphasised the importance of Orthodox-Catholic dialogue. He was speaking yesterday at the close of the 23rd plenary session of the Conference of Catholic Bishops of Russia. "Ecumenical activity is not just a choice made by certain clergymen, but the fulfillment of Christ's will to unity among Christians," said the Vatican representative.

The Conference's general secretary, Fr Igor Kovalevsky, said participants of the plenary had paid particular attention to inter-confessional and inter-religious dialogue. 

The Catholic bishops of Russia also discussed work of the structures managed by the Church in the country and declared 10 December 2006, the second Sunday in Advent, as the Day of Prayer for benefactors of the Church. 

Attending the session were the President of the Conference, Mgr Joseph Wert, Mgr Tadeusz Kondrusiewicz, acrchbishop of the Mother of God archdiocese in Moscow, Mgr Clemens Pikkel of the diocese of St. Clement in Saratov and the first secretary of the Nunciature in Russia, Mgr Ante Josiz.
