Chattogram (AsiaNews) – Celebrations have begun for the 50th anniversary of Caritas Bangladesh .

Yesterday a lively procession set off from St Placid's School and College making its way to the Shaikat Hotel in Chattogram.

All the country’s bishops took part in the event, along with Caritas managers and staff, faithful, activists and government officials.

Caritas was first established in Bangladesh in 1967 as the eastern branch of Caritas Pakistan. It took on the present form and name on 13 January 1971 when East Pakistan began the process that would lead to its independence as the new nation of Bangladesh.

At present, the Catholic charity operates in 208 subdistricts (upazila). During emergencies, such as natural disasters, it can mobilise in any corner of the country. It is currently involved in 112 projects benefitting about 1.6 million people.

For Bishop James Romen Boiragi of Khulna, who is Caritas Bangladesh president, the charity is tasked with promoting integrated human development.

“We work to emancipate the disadvantaged and the forgotten,” he said, stressing the need to find out in which domain it can help the most. "This jubilee must teach us to work for those who are still underprivileged in society,” he added.

In the past 50 years, Caritas has tried to change people's lives, this according to Caritas Bangladesh Executive Director Sebastian Rozario.

"In the future we will deal with social development and promote peace in our society,” he explained.

At the same time, close attention must be paid to the family. “We think that if families live in peace and love, the country will also develop in the same direction.”
