Israeli army kills young Palestinian, wounds another for "throwing stones"

The wounded youth said that he and his friend, both 17, were walking, and not throwing stones. Israel's military said instead that they were throwing stones. At least, 2,335 Palestinians were killed in 2014.

Nablus (AsiaNews/Agencies) - A 17-year-old youth, Imam Jamil Ahmad Dweikat, was killed in cold blood yesterday by an Israeli soldier in the village of Beita, south of Nablus.  His friend, also 17, Nael Talat Thiab, was wounded in the foot. Taken to a Nablus hospital, he talked about the incident (pictured, Maan photo).

Imam and Thiab had finished school and were walking in a park, when an Israeli soldier began to shoot at them. After the first shots missed, one hit Imam straight in the heart.

Thiab said that as he tried to run away, the soldier fired at him and hit him in the foot. However, he managed to reach the road and flag down an ambulance that took him to a hospital. The youth explained that neither he nor his dead friend had thrown stones or engaged in any act of violence.

According to the Israeli military, the two were shot at because they were throwing stones from the road. When asked to specify which road, a military spokeswoman did not answer. Nevertheless, Israeli military authorities announced an investigation into the incident.

Dweikat is the 50th Palestinian killed in the Occupied Territories this year, the 2,335th if the victims of last summer's Gaza War are considered.
