Maharashtra's premier resigns, handing power to Modi's allies

Today's headlines: industrial activity in China registers growth after three months; Samsung starts first ever mass production of three-nanometer chips;  Indonesia approves creation of three new provinces in Papua; Outgoing PM Bennett will not run again; In Russia, sanctions hit 4G internet networks; Parliamentary purges in Armenia.

INDIA

The chief minister of Maharashtra, the country's richest state, has resigned. Uddhav Thackeray, leader of the Shiv Sena, took the step after a group of his MPs switched to the opposition. Now PM Modi's BJP-Hindu nationalist- and its allies have the numbers to form a new state executive.

CHINA

After three months of contraction, industrial activity rose in June, a sign of a minimal recovery after the end of the lockdown in Shanghai. The official manufacturing index rose to 50.2 from 49.6 in May: above 50 signals expansion. However, the figure is below experts' expectations.

SOUTH KOREA

Samsung yesterday started the world's first mass production of three-nanometer microchips, the most advanced in the world. The South Korean hi-tech giant is the world's second-largest producer of semiconductors, used in everything from cars to fighter jets. Taiwan's Tsmc, the first global chipmaker, has yet to launch its three-nanometer line.

INDONESIA

Indonesia's parliament has passed the controversial law to create three new provinces in the Papua region. Critics say the move challenges special local autonomy and threatens indigenous peoples there.

ISRAEL

Outgoing Prime Minister Naftali Bennett, leader of Yamina, will not run in the upcoming elections. The announcement comes as his government is in the process of dissolving. Until the vote, the executive will be led by his coalition ally, centrist Yair Lapid.

RUSSIA

Due to a lack of spare parts, mobile network operators are dismantling 4G routers from Russia's small towns and moving them to major cities. In fact, because of sanctions, Sweden's Ericsson, Finland's Nokia and China's Huawei have left Russia. The country lacks the equipment to ensure the speed of connections.

ARMENIA

To strengthen its positions in Parliament, the majority party Civil Accord challenged the deputy Speaker of the House, opposition MP Gegam Manukyan of the "Ayastan" party. Another opponent, Vage Akopyan, was stripped of the chairmanship of the Economy Commission. Reason: frequent absences from the chamber to participate in protest actions against the government.
