Philippines, Rodrigo Duterte's loyalist withdraws from presidential race

In other news today: more than 200 Rohingya who wanted to leave Myanmar  arrested; world squash championship in Malaysia cancelled after visas were not issued to Israeli players; Simpsons episode on Tiananmen Square massacre removed from streaming in Hong Kong.

PHILIPPINES

Rodrigo Duterte's designated successor to the presidency, Senator Christopher Go, today withdrew his candidacy. The Constitution of the Philippines prevents Duterte from running for another six-year term in the elections next May. Currently, polls give an advantage to the son of former dictator Ferdinand Marcos.

MALAYSIA - ISRAEL

The world squash championship, which was to have been held in Kuala Lumpur starting on December 7, has been cancelled following Malaysia's refusal to issue visas to Israeli athletes. Malaysia, where 60% of the population is Muslim, has repeatedly declared its support for the Palestinian people.

MYANMAR

Yesterday 228 Rohingya who were attempting to leave the country by boat were arrested by Burmese police and handed over to immigration authorities. Among them were 33 children. Myanmar, which has a Buddhist majority, does not recognize Muslim Rohingya as citizens.

INDIA

In the city of Gurugram (Gurgaon), an important economic and financial hub near the capital, there are only about twenty prayer places left for Muslims; until three years ago there were about a hundred. Hindu nationalist groups are demanding that even those remaining be closed and used for Hindu rituals.

HONG KONG

The 12th episode of the 16th season of The Simpsons is missing on Disney+ in Hong Kong. It is the one dedicated to the Tiananmen Square massacre, in which the cartoon family is on a trip to Beijing visiting the square and finds a sign saying "Nothing happened here in 1989". Disney has not commented on the event.

JAPAN

Over the past five years, Japan's population has decreased by 0.7%. This is the second consecutive decline in national censuses. People of working age (who are between 15 and 64 years old) compared to 2015 are 2.26 million less, a decrease of 3%; on the other hand, the over-65s increased by 7%.

TURKMENISTAN

Family members of migrant workers and prisoners will no longer be considered eligible to buy food at subsidized prices. Turkmenistan has increasingly restricted access to state-owned grocery stores that offer essential products at prices up to 10 times lower than private stores.

RUSSIA

After the Russian football "classic" between Zenit St. Petersburg and Cska Moscow (won by the latter 2-0), Petersburg police detained visiting fans for over four hours, banning food and refreshments in sub-zero temperatures, and evacuating them in groups with avtozak. Over four hundred fans were detained for possession and use of prohibited pyrotechnics.
