Pope’s post-operative progress is 'regular and satisfactory'

The Infusion therapy has been suspended. “The final histological examination has confirmed a severe diverticular stenosis with signs of sclerosing diverticulitis.” Greetings have poured in from all over the world.

Vatican City (AsiaNews) – There are good news from Rome’s Gemelli University Hospital, this according to the director of the Holy See Press Office, Matteo Bruni, in a press release.

“The post-operative progress of His Holiness Pope Francis continues to be regular and satisfactory,” the statement reads.

“The Holy Father has continued to eat regularly and [the] infusion therapy has been suspended.”

“The final histological examination has confirmed a severe diverticular stenosis with signs of sclerosing diverticulitis.

“Pope Francis is touched by the many messages and the affection received in these days, and expresses his gratitude for the  closeness and prayer.”

In reporting the situation, Vatican News cites a number of messages from, among others, the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew I; the Grand Imam of Al Azhar Ahmad al-Tayyeb, who addressed his best wishes to his “dear brother”; the Anglican Centre in Rome, and the Chief Rabbi of Rome Riccardo Di Segni.

Among Catholics, in addition to the Diocese of Rome and the Catholic Bishops' Conference of Italy, greetings for a speedy recovery have also come from the Latin American Episcopal Council (CELAM) and New Zealand Catholics.

World leaders have also sent their best wishes; they include the President of Italy Sergio Mattarella, that of Israel Reuven Rivlin, Nigeria Muhammadu Buhari, Venezuela Nicolas Maduro, and Malta George William Vella.
