Pope Francis made the announcement during this morning’s consistory. Four other blessed will become saints: two Italians, one German and one Spanish-Argentinian.
Vatican City (AsiaNews) – In this morning’s consistory, Pope Francis announced that Paul VI and Mgr Oscar Romero will be canonised on 14 October.
The pontiff decided to canonise the pope of the Second Vatican Council and the "martyr of El Salvador" last March.
Four other blessed will be canonised along with Paul VI (Giovanni Battista Montini, 1897-1978, born in Brescia, Italy) and Archbishop Romero of San Salvador (1917-1980), killed celebrating Mass. They are:
- Francesco Spinelli (1853-1913), a diocesan priest from Milan who founded the Institute of the Sisters Adorers of the Blessed Sacrament and the Sacramentine Sisters of Bergamo;
- Vincenzo Romano (1751-1831), diocesan priest in Torre del Greco (Naples), famous for his work of evangelisation among the young, the poor, and criminals;
- Maria Katharina Kasper (1820-1898), a virgin, German, foundress of the Institute of the Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ, who lived the apostolate for the poor, seniors, children and orphans;
- Nazaria of Saint Teresa of Jesus (Nazaria Ignacia March Mesa, 1889-1943), virgin, who founded the Missionaries of the Crusade. Born in Spain, she worked in Argentina promoting women and serving the poor.
