A young bishop for Chongqing, one of China’s megacities

Father Andrew Ding Wang, 44, was ordained today under the 2018 Sino-Vatican agreement. Leo XIV conferred on him the title of archbishop, as required by the jurisdiction of the Holy See (and the history of the local Church), even though China has no metropolitan sees. Three of the four bishops chosen in recent weeks in China were born after 1980.

    China sold and donated some 80 million doses to 60 countries. Its lead was facilitated by export controls by the European Union and India. Chinese vaccines have not yet been licenced by the World Health Organisation. Beijing will have trouble producing enough vaccines for itself and others. As a geopolitical tool, vaccines might flop.
