Self-immolations in Tibet: two young men set themselves on fire and die

Victims died on December 8. Both were 23 years old, one a monk from Kirti, . Since 2009, 94 Tibetans have committed suicide against the Chinese occupation, for the return of the Dalai Lama.

Lhasa (AsiaNews) - The protests of the Tibetan world against China is relentless: two young 23 year olds have died after setting themselves on fire, calling for the return of the Dalai Lama to Tibet. Both self-immolations took place on 8 December, but the episodes are separate.

Pema Dorjee (see photo) set himself on fire at 16:35 (local time), in front of the Shetsang monastery (Luchi County, Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Kanlho). There is little or no information available about him.

Kunchoek Phelgay, a monk from Kirti (Dzoge County, Ngaba Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture), set himself on fire at 17:30 (local time) outside the monastery refectory. He died on the spot, the youth's body was taken by the religious of his monastery to pray over him and give him a proper funeral.

Their deaths bring to 94 the number of Tibetans who since 2009 have chosen to set themselves on fire against China's occupation of Tibet. (NC)
