Seoul (AsiaNews/Agencies) – North Korea is likely capable of developing a nuclear device small enough to fit on one of its ballistic missiles, this according to a confidential United Nations report, based on information provided by a number of member states, which Reuters has seen.
The report, which the UN sent yesterday to the 15-member UN Security Council North Korea sanctions committee, notes that the past six nuclear tests have improved Pyongyang’s ability to “miniaturize” nuclear devices.
In addition to continuing the production of highly enriched uranium, which is needed for nuclear weapons, Kim Jong-un’s regime wants to build multiple warhead systems with strong penetration capacity.
This would give North Korea the capability of targeting the United States and much of Europe with its own ballistic missiles.
Economic and financial sanctions, which the UN imposed in 2006, have not stopped Pyongyang’s nuclear programme.
In 2018 and 2019, US President Donald Trump met Kim three times in an attempt to resolve the dispute, but the two sides failed to reach an agreement.
North Koreans do not intend to give up their nuclear arsenal before sanctions are lifted.
