Park close to impeachment after large-scale demonstrations bring together 2 million people

Opposition parties plan to present a motion in parliament in two-days time. Demonstrations take place in different South Korean cities. In Seoul alone, some 1.5 million people come together.

Seoul (AsiaNews) – South Korean President Park Geun-hye is close to impeachment as opposition parties prepare to present a motion in parliament in two-days time.

The motion is expected to receive a two-third majority. In addition to the votes of the opposition Democratic Party and People’s Party, members of the president’s Saenuri party appear ready to vote for the impeachment.

Park is embroiled in a corruption scandal involving her friend Choi Soon-sil. The latter, the daughter of a cult leader (almost a guru) who is friends with the Park family, is accused of interfering in South Korea’s domestic and foreign policies, as well as obtaining funding for foundations which she set up and used for personal gain.

Two days ago, another demonstration in Seoul brought together almost 1.5 million people (pictured).

Braving the snow and the cold, similar demonstrations took place in other cities bringing together about 2 million people. Other mass demonstrations took place in previous weeks.
