Ahmadinejad’s popularity plummets among voters

A survey reveals that 53% of those who elected the president in 2005 would not make the same choice now, to the advantage of Rafsanjani. Negative opinions on the current government, approval, however of its foreign policy and safeguarding of Islamic principals.

Teheran (AsiaNews) – The majority of people who voted for  Ahmadinajad in the last round of presidential elections would not make the same choice today.  A survey carried out by the Iranian Student Polling Agency (ISPA), spoke to people who elected the current head of state in 2005 and affirmed that 53% of them would not confirm their choice, despite keeping the same political orientation.

This recent change among voters is to the advantage of the pragmatic Hashemi Rafsanjani who over 16% of the former fans of the current president have turned their alliance.  5% said they would vote for Mohammad Ghalibaf, a conservative and current mayor of Tehran and over 24% said they would not give any of the above their preference.

Pollsters also found that 52 %of people give the current administration an ‎‎“unsatisfactory” grade through the survey criteria, 17 %as “satisfactory, and 31% as “neither ‎satisfactory nor unsatisfactory”. Survey participants also rated the administration’s progress in “preserving Islamic principles” and foreign policy as positive, whereas its progress in social justice, controlling inflation, protecting social freedoms and ‎‎implementing campaign promises is seen to be negative.
