New York (AsiaNews/Agencies) – The Security Council will discuss a new package of sanctions aimed at stopping Irons nuclear ambitions next week. The draft was drawn up by the so called group of “5+1” – the five permanent members of the council (United States, Britain, France Russia and China) along with Germany – overcoming objections from Moscow and Beijing.
The British ambassador to the United Nations said that the Council comprising the ten non permanent members will be called to express their views on the draft resolution next week. Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad – defining the document as “Waste Paper” – has already lodged a formal request to participate in the session, without the right to vote. According to reports from world press agencies, measures foreseen in the text will hit a long list of individuals and businesses linked to the Iranian ballistic missile and nuclear programmes, placing them under financial restrictions and freezing foreign investments. Moreover there will also be moves to block Iranian arms exports and financial assistance to the country, with the exclusion of humanitarian aid.
Teheran’s immediate response was to reaffirm that it will not suspend uranium enrichment, which it claims is for “civilian use” and a national right.
