IAEA chief arrives in Tehran tomorrow

Yukiya Amano’s trip comes a few days before new round of talks between Iran and the 5 +1 negotiators. The discussions touched on the controversy over Agency's report last year which suggested the possible developments of the military nuclear program, which Tehran claimed is a "fabrication".

Vienna (AsiaNews / Agencies) - The Director General of the UN Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Yukiya Amano, leaves tomorrow for talks with Tehran's chief nuclear negotiator Saeed Jalil.

Amano's trip to Iran - he will be accompanied by the chief of inspectors Herman Nackaerts and assistant general director Rafael Grossi - falls a few days before the start of talks in Baghdad between the Islamic Republic and the negotiators of the 5 +1 (the countries that are part of the security Council, namely the United States, Russia, China, Britain and France, plus Germany).

As for the contents of the mission, the IAEA, in a note, only talks about "issues of mutual interest," but it is widely known that the agency wants Iran's response regarding issues raised by a report last year on possible ongoing activities in the country to develop nuclear energy for military purposes, namely to build an atomic bomb.

Iran has always denied the idea and argued that the report was created on false information, but the IAEA said that the inspectors need to have access to sites, documents and officials to reach credible conclusions in its investigation .

The last visit by an IAEA Head to Tehran was Mohamed ElBaradei, Amano's predecessor, in October 2000.
