Tehran (AsiaNews / Agencies) - Iran has rejected the UN Security Council condemnation of an assault on the British embassy in Tehran (in the photo), arguing that it has led to "global security being at risk”. This view was expressed by Parliament President, Ali Larijani, who called it "hasty", adding that it aims to "cover up the crimes previously committed by the United States and Great Britain." A similar response was given today by the Iranian press.
In Tehran today, European ambassadors will meet to assess the situation and it is assumed that the matter will also be in Europe's foreign ministers meeting in Brussels tomorrow.
Great Britain today confirmed the evacuation of part of its diplomatic personnel in Iran and accompanying family members. "The Prime Minister and Foreign Minister made it clear that ensuring the safety of our staff and their families is our immediate priority," reads a note from the Foreign Office. Germany has learned that a German school located next to the British embassy was damaged during the “student’s” assault.
Iran, for its part, has expressed "regret" over the incident, claiming that the police - which in reality failed to intervene immediately - did "its best" to protect the embassy.
Condemnation of the embassy assault, expressed by several parties – including Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon who said he was "shocked and outraged" – is now being followed by analysis of the reasons that provoked it. Significantly, the China Daily, the English edition of the People's Daily, quotes an expert who argues that the decision to attack the embassy was prompted by contrasts between the more conservative sectors of the Parliament and the government of Ahmadinejad.
