Kirkuk (AsiaNews) – New attacks have taken place against Christian targets in Iraq. After the co-ordinated attacks against Christians in Mosul and Baghdad on Epiphany Day last week, Kirkuk’s Christian community came under fire this time. In three separate incidents car bombs exploded near the Chaldean Cathedral of the Holy Heart, the Syro-Catholic Church of Saint Ephraim and a third, still unidentified church.
Sources told AsiaNews that the explosions occurred around 4 pm local time.
Church authorities are on the blast sites to ascertain damages to people and property.
This it the first time Kirkuk’s Christian community experiences this kind of violence. Thus far the city had been one of the most peaceful areas in the country.
