Tel Aviv (AsiaNews / Agencies) - In a last minute twist, the Israeli government led by Benjamin Netanyahu has found a new agreement to retain power, withdraw the threat of early elections made two days ago and announce a new coalition government between Likud and the Kadima centrist minority party. After a night of consultations in the Knesset, Israel's parliament, the agreement was announced by the two leaders: Netanyahu and Shaul Mofaz.
Israeli President Shimon Peres confirmed he was aware of this operation. The new government will rely on a parliamentary majority of 94 seats out of 120. The opposition passes to Shelly Yehimovic, Labour leader with only 8 seats. According to the agreement Mofaz was appointed vice premier and will attend meetings of the Council of Defense of the Government, the organ with the most delicate functions of the entire state.
The deal is not only a political blow to Netanyahu, who maintains power, but also for the new leader of Kadima. Ex general, considered a "hawk" and former Chief of Staff, Mofaz is known for his hard-line positions against Iran. He won the leadership of the party last March 28 thanks to these credentials, making him a good ally for the Executive. The new arrangements should come into force on 10 May.
