Riyadh announces plan to rehabilitate inmates

Interior Ministry illustrate plan in response to concerns voiced by the Saudi National Human Rights Society on prison conditions.

Riyadh (AsiaNews) – The Interior Ministry’s new plan to rehabilitate prisoners was presented  to the National Human Rights Society  in response to concerns voiced by the human rights group about prison conditions in the Kingdom.

The Saudi Gazette reported that the Ministry’s plan includes two programmes designed to improve the situation of prisons and prisoners. One programme will provide counselling to inmates regarding adjustment to institution life, resolution of personal problems, and acceptance of professional assistance in the rehabilitative process. The other also involves lecturing them on their wrong views and social values as part of the second stage in which they are reintegrated into society.

Reintegration and employment are in fact the basic goals of the plan.
