Sylhet (AsiaNews) - "Christianity and Islam have much in common and in working together can establish peace and prosperity in the world." This is how Msgr. Bejoy N. D'Cruze, Bishop of Sylhet and president of the Episcopal Commission for Christian unity and interfaith dialogue, sends his greetings to the Muslims of Bangladesh for the feast of Id al-Fitr, which marks the end of Ramadan.

"In this holy month - says the prelate - Muslims joyfully give to the poor, sharing their pains and their labors. Both our religions speak of one God, of love, of forgiveness, and even fear."

Reflecting on the current situation in Bangladesh, marked by tensions and violence of a political nature, Msgr. D'Cruze recalls: "We are living in a time of great uncertainty. Cruelty and conflicts are growing day by day in the country. But Islam is a religion of peace, in this month of fasting you have made many sacrifices, Fasting makes Muslims more self-controlled, patient, tolerant and sympathetic. Practicing these good virtues leads people towards holiness. "

"Jesus - he continues - teaches us that without unity and harmony among the different religions it is impossible to have peace. So we have to respect all faiths, their teachings and values. I respect the Islamic faith and culture."
