University of Dhaka dedicates new library to Archbishop Ganguly

The capital's main academic institution names new library in the prelate's honour. At the inauguration, Christians and Muslims remember him as a "universal leader". For a Catholic teacher, "He was a great man, not only for Christians, but for all the people of Bangladesh."

Dhaka (AsiaNews) - The University of Dhaka's newest library is named after Archbishop T A Ganguly. The facility's inauguration was held on 2 September at the Department of World Religions and Culture with the participation of Christian and Muslim scholars and officials, as well as about a hundred students.

"We are very pleased to be able to dedicate this project to him," said Vice Chancellor Arefin Siddique, a Muslim, at the opening ceremony. "He was a wise person as well as a great teacher."

Mgr Theotinus Amal Ganguly, named archbishop of Dhaka in 1967 and head of the Bishops' Conference in 1973, is remembered by many as a "universal leader," close to the faithful of his diocese and to the victims of the War of Independence (1971).

"He was a great man, not only for Christians but for all the people of Bangladesh, of any religious belief," Fr Tapon B. Rozario told AsiaNews.

"He had an exceptional charisma," said the clergyman, who also teaches in the department, "and it is right that our students should learn more about him and his work."

The T.A. Ganguly Library is part of the Department of World Religions and Culture, where the archbishop was one of the most distinguished scholars, and contains a series of volumes dedicated to his life provided by the archdiocese to the university.

The inauguration ceremony was held on the 36th anniversary of the bishop's death, seven years since the start of his cause of beatification in 2006.
