Port Blair (AsiaNews) – A mass of protestant Christians surround the Andaman’s Anglican bishop’s home to see the painting of Christ, which is said to have shed tears of blood. The Catholic bishop, who spoke to Asiatimes, does not confirm the episode and urges caution.
Thousands of people from the Andaman Islands gathered in the capital, Port Blair, in order to see the painting, which apparently started to bleed last week. The picture was hanging in the dining hall of a local police station.
The owner, agent Eric Nathaniel, explains, “Last week we noted that there was blood under the painting. At first, we washed it off thinking it was just dirty. But two days later, the stains reappeared. When I took it to the bishop, it had stopped bleeding.”
The Catholic bishop of Port Blair, mons. Aleixo Dias, told AsiaNews, “I heard about the story, but I have not seen the painting and I do not plan on doing so. In the past there have been similar incidents and so I urge caution in order to avoid fueling false religious sentiments. Now if you will excuse me, I must attend the Confirmation of some young children, something which to me is much more important than this painting.”
