New Delhi (AsiaNews) – Today the first ever International Day for Non Violence marks the 138th anniversary of “Mahatma” Gandhi. Msgr Oswald Gracias, Archbishop of Mumbai and President, of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India, tells AsiaNews that non violence is not just simple pacifism. Gandhi, farther of the Indian nation – said the prelate - has become the strongest global symbol of non-violence in the 20th century. Non violence is not just the absence of violence; it is a spirit of peace, of forgiveness, understanding, and tolerance – these are the essential principles of non- violence. This is not just the end, but the means to creating a World Society where Justice Peace and Human Rights of even the most marginalized are respected.”
Is Religious Freedom essential for Non- Violence?
Religious Freedom is a basic and fundamental prerequisite Non Violence and Mutual co- existence, because without religious freedom, we are sowing seeds of disharmony and mistrust. Religious freedom can serve as an element of synthesis, as a bridge, among the diverse communities and nations. True religious conviction can never be a cause for division or violence within the human community, rather it promotes value based society where a sense brotherhood and understanding prevails and is nurtured”. Mahatma Gandhi’s values and message are still universally relevant. History is witness to the amount of personal sacrifice he made bring about more understanding between communities, and tolerance and amity. ……..ultimately Gandhi gave his life for the Cause. In the Indian Context, if we have leaders who are disciples of the teachings and message of the Mahatma, our beloved Nation would be able to make a contribution both for internal peace and harmony as well as be guardians and promoters of peace among our neighbouring courtiers. Savodaya was coined by Mahatma Gandhi to mean the welfare of all, and our Leaders not only in India, but global leaders with the Spirit of Non Violence can create an effective and enabling environment both in the social and political context which promote and protect the welfare of all especially those on the margins of society.
How hopeful are you of ‘Non Violence being the Order of the Day in a Global Society?
Conflicts and difference of opinion will always present, but it is important to realise that Non- Violence also implies the presence of justice which results in the presence of peace. Whilst I am hopeful that this Spirit of Non-violence may create a willingness to resolve conflicts through peaceful conflict resolution. On the other hand as nations across the world continue to grapple with the threat of conflict, violence and terrorism., this Non Violence should not be pushed to the margins or the fringes of conflicts where people have other means of resolving conflicts and other violent means of achieving ones end. So , while I would never give up hope, I am an aware that this is a difficult process.” (NC)
