Mumbai (AsiaNews) - The Archdiocese of Calcutta inaugurated the extraordinary missionary month of October 2019 with a ceremony in the Nitika Don Bosco Institute [a technical school].

Speaking to AsiaNews Fr. Gilbert Choondal, a Salesian who works in the diocese, says: "The program was an opportunity to share the creative ways in which we can observe this month in our families, communities and parishes of the archdiocese".

The inaugural event took place on October 1st last and was also attended by Sr. Mary Prema, superior general of the Missionaries of Charity (the congregation founded by Mother Teresa of Calcutta). The meeting lasted about two hours, during which a video was shown to explain the Missionary Month, wanted by Pope Francis to support the mission of the Catholic Church among those who do not know Christ and to renew the Church's “outward bound” missionary zeal.

Fr. Choondal says that "the program was organized in collaboration between archdiocese, religious and Salesians". During the meeting the priest explained "the meaning of the extraordinary missionary Month and the reason why Pope Francis summoned him: to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the [apostolic letter Maximum Illud] of Pope Benedict XV".
